Residents began moving into the Meriwether, the first completed residential high-rise tower in Portland’s South Waterfront District

The Meriwether is the first completed residential high-rise tower in Portland's South Waterfront

When Portland's City Council passed the Central City Plan in 1988, the intent was to drive residents to “North Macadam” with the hope of 20 condominiums each city block, writes The Oregonian's Dylan Rivera. With the opening of The Meriwether, the area—now the South Waterfront district—is the start of 200 condos an acre, “... far more than Portlanders in the late '80s ever imagined.”

“Standing in the living room, [Brian] Topper gazed west at scores of workers in hard hats moving equipment hither and yon. Some were demolishing an old building to make way for a new park a few blocks away. Others were putting finishing touches on the Meriwether's west tower.”

"'This is what makes Portland Portland,' said Topper, 33.”
