A new residential tower in River North boasts an Oregonian sensibility

The Architect’s Newspaper reports on the “Portlandia-Fication” of Downtown Chicago with the arrival of Jones Chicago – Gerding Edlen’s Chicago debut. The 25-story tower includes 188 luxury apartment homes at 220 W. Illinois Street in the River North neighborhood.

“The Jones boasts some unique flourishes that its developers hope will bring a Portland touch to the ‘design-forward, entrepreneurial values’ of the neighborhood, which has in recent years replaced rundown warehouses with high-tech offices and upscale lofts.”

Nest Learning ThermostatsÔ regulate the units, and an integrated building HVAC system diverts hear pump condensation to irrigate plants on the third-floor pool deck. A hybrid window-wall system conceals massive shear walls, helping the energy-efficient building achieve LEED Gold Certification. Additional features include a bike room with 135 bike parking spaces, a parking structure with electric car plug-ins and a private dog run area with a dog wash and heat lamps for year round use.

Gerding Edlen also plans to open a 240-unit apartment building at 625 W. Division Street in the Fall.
