Brewery Blocks Redevelopment Selected as Finalist in ULI Global Awards for Excellence Competition
Jun 26, 2014
PORTLAND, OR—Portland's iconic Brewery Blocks redevelopment has been selected as a finalist in the 2014 ULI Global Awards for Excellence competition, "widely recognized as the land use industry's most prestigious recognition program." The Brewery Blocks is one of23 developments from around the world competing for the awards; a group of winners will be announced in October at ULI's 2014 Fall Meeting.
Portland-based architecture firm GBD Architects Incorporated (GBD) and development partners Gerding Edlen submitted the Brewery Blocks for the prestigious award in early March. The Brewery Blocks comprise a thriving and sustainable mixed-use, urban community in Portland's Pearl District. The development includes seven buildings on five contiguous city blocks. Uses include retail, office, residential, cultural and performing arts spaces totaling over 1.7 million sq. feet; and features renovation of the historic Portland Armory building and the old Blitz-Weinhard Brewery complex. The redevelopment has become an iconic urban destination, enlivened with vibrant streetscapes and connected to the rest of the city by a smart transportation system.
Nearly 15 years have passed since Gerding Edlen acquired the five blocks. Evidence of the project's success is found in the positive financial returns for investors and in the dividends that continue to be paid to the community in the form of a walkable, livable and sustainable neighborhood.
"The Brewery Blocks was a very complex and innovative project and one that exemplifies our firm's values of place making, 20-minute living and environmental sustainability," says Mark Edlen, CEO of Gerding Edlen. "It's been extremely rewarding for us to witness the project's enduring success over the years and for it to be recognized as a finalist for this award, in the company of other such remarkable projects."
The team is honored to have the Brewery Blocks be selected as a finalist, among a broad mix of exemplary urban redevelopment projects from around the world. Next steps in the award selection process include site tours and interviews with jury members.
