Extending the Success of the Brewery Blocks
Until now, surface parking dominated the blocks on Southwest Washington between 12th and 13th Avenues in downtown Portland, Oregon. This area, known as the West End, is located between the vibrant, pedestrian-friendly Pearl District and Portland’s Central Business District. West Burnside, an active street that divides Portland into north and south neighborhoods, separates the 12th and Washington project from the successful Brewery Blocks development and the greater Pearl District. In 12th and Washington, the strategy was to extend the success of the Brewery Blocks across Burnside thus acting as a connector between the West End and the Pearl District. To make this a reality, Gerding Edlen needed to attract other commercial development to the area. ZGF Architects needed a new headquarters to accommodate their growing workforce. Combining ZGF’s new office with market-rate apartments and vibrant ground-floor retail will bring more people into this portion of the city’s core, stimulating economic and cultural development. Upon completion the project will house five floors of underground parking, ground-floor retail, 85,000 square feet of offices and 277 apartments. The project is targeting LEED Platinum Certification from the USGBC.
