Live the 20
Smart Living now extends to the East side of the Willamette river with Portland’s The 20 on Hawthorne. Construction on this 51-unit one- and two-bedroom apartment building began in the Fall of 2008 and the building was ready for occupancy on June 1, 2009.
The 20 on Hawthorne, designed by GBD Architects, is targeting LEED Silver Certification using such sustainability features as recycled materials, high-efficiency appliances and high-efficiency glass windows. Each unit features Armstrong Marmoleum flooring made with natural, recycled and rapidly renewable materials in the bathrooms and premium energy efficient lighting throughout. Cabinetry in the kitchen and bathrooms is also made from recycled materials and low-flow/ultra low-flow bath and kitchen faucets along with dual flush toilets are used to conserve water. The lush ecoroof not only aids with building insulation and rainwater runoff, but serves as a patio area and amenity space to Second floor units. To blend with the culture of this pedestrian-friendly neighborhood, the ground floor one-bedroom/one-bath units have an individual entrance to facilitate use as a live/work space.
We really maximized our use of the square footage in this building by installing an automated parking system which, is the largest of its type in the country. This 'puzzle parking' system stores 29 cars on "trays" that move up and down and side to side. Smartly-stated, this system allows for 29 cars to be parked in an area that would typically only accommodate 10. All of these sustainable features promote the idea of Smart Living, lowering the impact of development on the environment.
